"Bruiser was inspired by several things:
1. I bumped my head in the deep end of the community pool one day. Had I bumped my head harder, I might have drowned.
2. I wanted to tell a story about a “healer” who didn’t just take away physical pain, but more importantly, emotional pain—something I hadn’t seen in the familiar healer trope.
3. I wanted to tell a story about a family struggling with a divorce, and have the kids come to realize that they will not only survive it, but thrive in the aftermath."- Neal Shusterman.

I don't know how the author (Mr. Shusterman) got the idea of this, but I can tell you if this was based on a true story of not:
Likely not. It has some magical realism in it. It's totally possible that Mr. Shusterman wrote about other instances (the one's without magical realism) from real-life experiences, but I'll bet that most of it isn't.
