I wondered the same thing. Seemed weird.

Well, the book starts in 1697 when Cécile is 12 years old, so she was born in 1685
The recluse Jeanne le Ber was born in 1662 and I think Pierre was the same age, so he would have been 23 years older than Cécile. As Molly says, it was perfectly normal at the time that men married younger girls and perfectly sensible, by the time the men were old enough to get married and have a family, the girls their age were not able anymore to have children.

Yeah, lotta questions there. I mean, at the time it wasn't unheard of for a 17 y.o. to marry a dude in his 40s, but still. It's in keeping with the character, though. She lives to serve her dad and God, so of course she'd be perfectly happy to marry a father figure and crank out babies for him. Sons, of course. I took Pierre to be early to mid-30s, which would make him around 40 when Celine gets to marrying age. Certainly doesn't hold up to today's standards!

I think he's mid-thirties.
