I would also reccomend the Zipes translation. Especially because it is a translation of the first edition which escaped the moralising of later editions. If you are looking for a simple and direct retelling then Philip Pullman's versions are just the thing. I have a review of the book on goodreads if you want to get more of a feel of it before buying.

The best modern English translation of the 'original tales' (i.e.: the 1812 and 1815 editions) is by Jack Zipes. It was published by Princeton University Press in 2014, and is highly affordable.
