So is this an actual correspondence between the author and Frank? I was a little confused, is this fiction or non fiction?

Sheila North Definitely non-fiction. Helen Hanff (the author) was a writer and bibiliophile in New York who began ordering books from the book shop at 84, Charing Cross Road, in London. Frank was one of the employees there, and became her chief correspondent.
