Elaine While never specifically stated, the book refers to a war and that Al Capone is dead (he died in 1947), so I assume perhaps in the 1950s or 60s.
Mr. Allain I'm reading the second novel now...in that book the world gets more clearly defined as a steampunky alternate universe with a mix of science-fictional and antiquated tech to suit the author's world.
Ursula Rasmusson-Wright some time during 1900. there is a referens to ww1 but never ww2 and they travel in a steampowered train. on the other hand the later books are more steam punky and slightly alternate history so i don't think it really matters.
