I think you can consider that an open end and just choose whatever you liked as the truth. I suppose the chance of them surviving is truly slim, so it's more likely that they died, but in the epilogue it says that Penelope still looks at the sea every night waiting for Odysseus's return and Andromache seemed to consider him alive and wondered if he was still carving Penelope's face in the sand somewhere.
