Goodreads asked Catherine Herzog:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Catherine Herzog The events in my life have inspired The Key to Her Heart, and even my characters themselves. Anna my heroine kinda as I developed her-- around 28-30 years ago-- developed a personality and as that happened it actually changed the story. The same thing with my villain Matthew Wolffe-- The more I worked the story the more his personality influenced how the outcome would be. When these two characters clashed, oh! It was fun! I would brainstorm to figure out if it was going to go Anna's way or Wolffe's and what would happen if the scene would go the opposite. I would talk it out with my oldest daughter and we really would go extreme! We would dream up sequences then she would say "Hey Mom what if it did go Wolffe's way?" I would ponder and say back "Well then he would do this..." And she would add on to it until we would figure out how I needed to take it. Some of those scenes really changed the whole story.
