What is a "longboarder"? (In the "about the author section.")
A "longboard" is a type of surfboard. The two main surfboard types are shortboards and longboards. Shortboards are faster, more maneuverable, turn much better. Longboards are easier to paddle, more stable, and you can "walk the board," eg. "hang 10." Many shortboarders look down on longboarders--they say "longboarding isn't surfing at all." In my view, shortboarding is high-adrenaline surfing, while longboarding is "soul surfing" (I can hear the shortboarders laughing now).
I recently finished a great book on surfing, if you're interested. , by William Finnegan.
