Goodreads asked Ann Berlak:

How do you get inspired to write?

Ann Berlak I write children's books that are (hopefully) compelling and beautiful, but also contribute to the creation of a more just and joyful future. I'm inspired to create books that will help teachers and parents have lively conversations about issues of economic injustice and how people joining together can address them. I want my books to provide opportunities to talk with children about issues which are so rarely addressed in school, often papered over as if children are blind to what they see around them, and as if school is not the place for engaging in critical thinking about questions children bring. As a teacher and teacher educator I've found it incredibly interesting to discover what sense children have made of their world and engage with them in examining what we "take for granite."
