How do you deal with writer’s block?

Nivi Engineer Sometimes it's a matter of my mind not being in 'create' mode, and then it helps to shift focus. I've got countless stories that could be revisited, edited, and if I'm not ready to create, then I look at one of them and try to get it ready to submit. On the other hand, if it's simply a matter of being out of practice (which happens even when I take a weekend off), reading great writing seems to jumpstart my brain into thinking of tons of ideas, whether it's a great novel or a fascinating newspaper article. Sometimes a change of scenery does the trick, and walking the dog helps that happen. But usually, it's a matter of coming up with a 'what if?' scenario to explore. Whether it's just a short paragraph that comes out of it, or the premise for a longer piece, I consider the character most likely to be troubled by the scenario, and I'm off...
