if you were american & going to be a first time visitor to Palestine - what (in addition to your poetry, of course!) would you read?
?absorb-able (real) history?
?historical or topical fiction- for understanding / culture?
This is a difficult question, because there is so much wonderful material out there. Just a few books that spring to mind:
History and the Nakba: Nur Masalha (The Expulsion of the Palestinians) and Ilan Pappe (The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine).
Fiction that sets the scene in Palestine from the Nakba through the early 2000s: Susan Abulhawa (Mornings in Jenin)
The political landscape today: Ali Abunimah (The Battle for Justice in Palestine)
A collection of short stories by young writers in Gaza (Gaza Writes Back)
New graphic novel: Leila Abdelrazaq (Baddawi)
The massacre on Gaza last summer: Max Blumenthal (The 51-Day War: Ruin and Resistance in Gaza)
