Goodreads asked Effie Kammenou:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Effie Kammenou I had the story of Sophia and Dean in my head for a long time. I always thought that someday I might write a love story using my greek heritage as a backdrop. When my mother died three years ago, I started to write as a way to deal with my grief. Sophia's mother, Anastacia, was inspired by my mother. Originally, she was meant only to give a brief history of Sophia's background, but Anastacia's story took on a life of its own. although it is not my mother's story, there are some parallels. The way in which both my mother and Anastacia come to New York is the same, where they end up living, and their relationship with their sisters is similiar. There are a few other things as well, but I don't want to create any spoilers. I then intwined the two love stories together, by making mother and daughter two passionate and strong women who are devoted to the ones they love.
