Goodreads asked J. Clifton Slater:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

J. Clifton Slater I have been an avid reader since the age of 10. After reading a variety of genres, I found Fantasy and Science Fiction. At some point, I filled a space room with books. Not a library, just stacks of books that I'd read.

In 2001, I realized that I wouldn't ride a motorcycle across Europe or spend enough time in Australia to surf a 50 foot wave but I could write a book.
There was a blank page and a will to write but no idea. While reading an issue of Forbes magazine, I saw an article about Erbium. This mineral is used to coat fiber optic cables. I began a short story about a mining operation. As I wrote it, I began to wonder where the ore would be processed and who would use the product.

I began to answer these questions and over 14 years developed the Galactic Council Realm. On Station is the first novel from the Realm and the start was an article in a business magazine.
