Goodreads asked Maureen Milliken:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Maureen Milliken Want to write a book? The best advice I can give is to sit down and start writing. Don't worry about not knowing where it's going, or having an outline. Just write. Also, observe. Observe everything around you -- what's happening, what people are saying, what they're feeling, reactions. All of that will make your book richer. And read. So, to recap: Write. Observe. Read.
And a final note: please pay attention to the rules of grammar and style. Respect submission standards and don't assume the rules don't apply to you. Respect the craft and understand that it's hard work.
There's no magic bullet and inattention and lack of respect for the craft show.
