The character of Clara del Valle, the clairvoyant grandmother who talked to spirits, in The House of the Spirits, is modeled after my grandmother, who was a magical woman. She taught me that the world is a very mysterious place and there are several dimensions of reality that we cannot perceive with ur limited five senses, but we can feel them with intuition and imagination. The idea that mystery is all around us has been with me always it enriches my life and my writing. Sometimes in my novels I use elements of magical realism as metaphors, pero other times it is part fo the characters reality.
