Dolen Perkins-Valdez Hi Valerie! I found an agent while attending a writing conference. Sometimes agents visit writing conferences to look for talent. I encourage you to find networking opportunities. Go to writers conferences. Join a writing group or association. Yes, I would consider self-publishing. It just takes a lot of work because it's hard for self-published authors to get publicity. But I have met many self-published authors at conferences who set up tables and hand sell their books! It's actually a lot of fun.
