What is your research process like, and how do you check your work for historical accuracy? Can you describe an instance when you decided, for dramatic or plot purposes, it was better to overlook historical precedent?
Ooh, Sam, this is a really good question. Hmm...I check for historical accuracy by checking every single book out of the library on a topic. I love the research part, so there is no rabbit hole too deep for me to jump into. Having said that, I feel very free as a fiction writer to overlook historical precedent all the time. I leave history to the historians, and I embrace the imaginative freedom of fiction writing!
