Judygr8 asked Steven A. Schwarzman:

I love Telushkin but am wondering if you could you recommend a book with more scope/depth? Particularly interested in a history of the Jews in the diaspora from the time of the destruction of the 2nd Temple--how the Jews spread, Jews in African/Sephardic countries, Ashkenazim, etc. This is for a weekly study group we hold at our synagogue. Currently reading Howard Sachar's "History of Jews in America." Thank you.

Steven A. Schwarzman Hi, Judygr8.

If you want a massively comprehensive, scholarly history of the Jews, try Ben-Sasson's History of the Jews (over 1000 pages). I used this as a student. For something newer and much shorter, I've heard recommendations for Scheindlin's A Short History of the Jewish People. Some people like Chaim Potok's Wanderings, but I read it too many years ago to remember how good it was.
