Goodreads asked J. Kent Preyer:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

J. Kent Preyer You know it. Don't give up. Write from your heart, not from the best seller lists. Pay for professional editing. Keep writing even when you see no light at the end of the tunnel. When you're done: Self-publish. It is mindboggling, nerve rattling, and totally flustering. But you keep all control. Buy all your own ISBN numbers. Writing a novel is pain. But it is worth all the pain when someone reads it and responds with a smile and a nice comment about your characters. It's a kind of immortality.
