Luck of the draw, really. Also, they note if you provide reviews to the books you read that you also are further considered for future First Reads program. It took me a bit to actually get invited to one. Terry Brooks is one of my favorite authors and that was a huge plus for me to join. Ever since, I've been getting picked for his picks.
