It is VERY different from the movie. The movie is only LIGHTLY based on the books. In the first three books, the apprentice is only 13 years old. Not near old enough for the love story implied by the movie.

The movie seemed just to use the characters from the book and basically turn it into a (relatively) PG-13 retelling of HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS; the movie had a "blood moon" reference and everything.
