Goodreads asked Victorino Matus:

How do you get inspired to write?

Victorino Matus Read the legends. For me, that would be A.J. Liebling, Joseph Mitchell, even Gay Talese. I so love a piece that's thoroughly reported and researched, well-sourced, and chock-full of color and candid interviews. Although I hate sitting down to transcribe an interview, I love the nuggets of information that come out of it, and I begin to see where it fits into my narrative. It's a great feeling to come across an interview subject saying something that you suddenly realize is the ending (or beginning) of your article.
