For someone who hasn't read the sequel series, would it be better to start with this prequel first, or read in the order that the books were released?

Angel Kanchev It's best that you start from the first MBotF book - Gardens of the Moon. Then you read the extra ones. And then comes the reread that has a particular book order.
Johny Well, this is quite hard to say. It depends how patient a observant reader you are. This is a great story, but as standalone it could be better than average. And with reading the whole Malazan series you would get used to Erikson's writing and style.
B.J. Richardson Do not start here. Let me repeat, DO NOT START HERE. This is a great book, but for anyone not a veteran of the Malazan world, you will never get past the first hundred pages. While chronologically before the others, this book clearly is not meant to be an intro to this universe.

I believe Esslemont's Path to Ascendancy might become a great starter series, but for now Gardens of the Moon is still the place to begin.
DangerBin Start with Gardens of the Moon for sure.
