William Saunders was the obstetrician at St Annes hospital. Beatrice met him when she was looking for someone who had been with Tess when her baby was born. All her medical records had disappeared. Even at that stage, Beatrice wondered if he was lying although she was asking the same question of most people she met. He seems to have been a ladies man.
