There was one part in this book I did not understand. After Jane died, the police sealed her house. No one was allowed in. Yet her niece and family not only moved in, they redecorated. This destroyed evidence but the police didn't do anything. Did I miss something?

Terrie Becky is right. And after that, they could get in due to it being reclassified as murder instead of a hunting accident.
Becky Her niece got a court order from a judge that allowed her in allowed her in the house and that overruled the police sealing.
