Amsterdam's squatters began as a '60s group of students, local artists and other youth residents who'd moved into abandoned buildings during the city's housing shortage after being unable to find not only affordable housing, but also housing in general. Building owners, of course, protested, which led to a squatting ban, resulting in rioting. And this story's characters found themselves in the midst of one of these.
