The killing of the sow demonstrates how killing had become sport rather than survival. It also shows severe shortsightedness. Killing the sow wasn't necessary, and deprived them of future sources of meat. True hunters rarely kill a female of a species, especially one caring for young. These were boys playing at being grown-ups and failing.
