Mady I'm not an advocate for banning books or telling someone they shouldn't read something because it contains inappropriate content. At the same time, I do think there is a proper time for a child to read a book. The main characters in Paper Towns are seniors in high school, so they, as expected, discuss things that are typical among 18 year-olds' discussions, such as sex and alcohol. More importantly, though, is the message that is sent through the book about imagining others complexly. This message may be a bit much for some younger kids to grasp, but depends entirely on the person. Some tweens can comprehend more profound themes, while some young adults can't. It all depends on the maturity of the reader. But, in terms of content, I would hesitate to give it to a 12 year old. 14 would be about the earliest age, in my opinion.
