I think this may be the book I've been trying to find, but I'm not sure. 1) Unicorns remain pure and white but gradually lose their radiance as they do good deeds until they fade. At the end of the book the unicorn has 3 dark spots. 2) To find the sword (i think) they have to go into this cave filled with spirits which steal your warmth, but they are repelled by fire. Are these part of this book?
