Maria Well, to lift the veil a bit here ... I included that detail because I wanted the reader to realize the reporter is suspicious of Saeed and the other refugees moving to Enniston. Even though the reporter is friends with the coach and is a former Chamberlain High athlete himself, his skepticism (perhaps even prejudice?) about the new Muslim arrivals prompts him to wonder whether Saeed is lying about his age and is too old to play high school sports. Despite the fact that his tawdry little newspaper is something you'd most likely use to light the woodstove, he does have the "power of the pen," so to speak. If he writes that Saeed is unqualified to play, he hands rival Maquoit High some pretty powerful ammunition. You have to ask yourself: do his prejudices outweigh even his loyalty to his old school and his former team?
