I'm struggling. I have never read a book like this and I haven't ever been a person to explore new types of books. I feel as if now is the time. Should this be the book to help me seek different genres?

It's good to try new things. But I suggest that you have a specific aim for trying different genre's or books. Have a purpose for reading. Don't be a mindless reader.
I also suggest that you keep an open mind and do not be influenced by the good or bad reviews. Have your own opinion. If some people love the protagonist, but you don't, thats okay. If some people gave it 5 stars and you only feel like giving 2, then that's fine.
