Bowie asked:

I admit it is poorly written but as for all the dirty sex, has anyone read "Justine" by Donatien Alphonse François de Sade? It's been widely regarded as a classic. Can anyone explain why literary judgment in this genre can be so arbitrary?

Sam if you mean this genre as erotica, its probably arbitrary because it isn't taken very seriously. people tend to be too embarrassed to talk about the erotica novels they have read, so good ones don't spread like wildfire like other genres do.
