I totally thought it was the deputy. There wasn't a ton of foreshadowing at all, I thought. It would seem obvious only in that we're trained to expect the unexpected.

It was obvious to me. He was too good to be true. But my daughter, who read this long before I did, said she was shocked when she found out. I still thought it was a great book, despite the fact that the bad guy was predictable.
