I got the impression that Nath did indeed return Jack's feelings in time. It may explain why he had such animosity towards him in his teenage years. I don't have the book in front of me (I listened on Audible), but I believe there was a comment about Nath tracing the small bump on Jack's nose with his finger... sounded to me like a tender, romantic gesture.
