Beatriz Yes, they are! Although things must have changed a bit (the book was written in the nineties), specially regarding technology which is evolving and spreading everywhere, of course.

You may have trouble finding "Pantanal" in maps because it is not a state or city... It is the name given for the biome which covers a great land over the territory of Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul (two Brazilian states) and part of Bolívia and Paraguai (another two South American countries).
