Two possible reasons:
1) Wilbanks took great exception to the apparent damage that Willie's newspaper had done to the presumed innocence of Danny Pidgett prior to the murder trial.
2) As we learn in "A Time to Kill" and its sequel "Sycamore Row", Wilbanks had a devil-may-care attitude and approach to practicing the law, highlighted by his NAACP activities, fueled by a fierce alcoholism, and capped off by his disbarment (i.e. losing his license to practice law).
