What could have possessed the soldiers travelling l to London with Jaime, to travel for days in close quarters with such a foul smelling being? A bath would have benefited all involved!

Doris Hayner Hygiene was not the first order of business in those days.. soap was not always available anyway as it was made by hand and I doubt soldiers had access to homemade soap. I believe that in some places baths were considered bad for one's health, as well, and to be avoided at all cost.
