Suzysci asked:

On Page 195, when writing about Robert A. Taft, the author wrote,"The Senator's grandfather, Alphonso Taft, had moved West to practice law in 1830, writing his father that..." Yet Alphonso entered Yale college in 1829 and supposedly graduated in 1832. Also he received his law degree in 1838, so he could not practice law in 1830, did he? Is this a mistake or my misunderstanding?

Dev Goswami Its a mistake, Alphonso Taft began Yale in 1829 and didn't finish till 1832. In the old days, it was possible to take the bar without legal course work but this was probably a misprint and should read 1840. Good eye.
