Nancy Berg asked:

It is interesting to me that Charlotte Branté used so much French dialogue. Was the assumption that everyone knew French back when this book was written?

See Min Lim I believe French was a language which mainly the nobility and wealthy used, especially so that the servants would not understand them.
Sarah Charlotte and her sister were sent to Belgium to learn French and therefore she would have had a basic understanding of French. I believe Charlotte was in Belgium for two years. Happy to be corrected if this is not true.
