No complete or satisfactory answer is given by the end of the novel. Some suggestion was made that Holmes was keeping an eye on things from this room, but it appears that he did not influence the plot of the book in any way (something I find hard to believe for SH).

We are never told. I strongly suspect there is a sequel in the planning and we'll find out his identity then.
