Goodreads asked Hamish Crawford:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Hamish Crawford Well, as it's a Sherlock Holmes-based story, the 'idea' was really handily written for me by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle 127 years ago. My particular slant on it came about through years of being a fan, and wondering about a particular character who never got much attention in the original stories. Then I started thinking about how the famous Holmes cases would appear through this character's eyes, and suddenly it seemed like it had a lot of potential that we had never seen before.
