Many authors send ARCs (Advanced Reader Copies) to their beta readers or sometimes in a giveaway. It's very common. This helps them get an unbiased opinion of their newest creation. Beta readers also give the authors feedback of the plot, believablilty, flow of the book, any personal thoughts, etc.
