So, this explains who hoarders are, why they do it, why we all need to look at ourselves and check if we have personal issues/ traumas that we're 'self-medicating' by becoming overly fond of stuff, right? But does it have any worthwhile suggestions to *help* hoarders, or even ordinary folks who have trouble parting with stuff??

Lowell Nelson I've read 3/4 of the way and so far this is not a self-help book. It's review of some of the possible causes and impacts of hoarding, buttressed by real-life examples to help elucidate.
Andy It gives some minimal advice to both hoarders and their loved ones at the end of the last chapter (include referrals to support and recovery organizations), and throughout the book it explains how therapy works and what positive and negative responses have come from public officials, but it's mostly a summary of the authors' research.
Nancy The only help I took away from it was that there are two kinds of hoarding levels clutterers who are just chronically disorganized and then the incredible hoarders that have extreme levels. Clutterers you can help but hoarders need serious mental evaluation and help. The only thing I found that seems to be what they found as being any help was to not shame the person, help clutterers by doing what is in their comfort zone while they work on the stuff while you are there. One tiny paragraph said that usually helps a clutterer to continue even after you leave. But hoarders will usually stop once the person leaves. No real therapy has been found to work as a one size fits all. The only thing that seemed to be was rating discomfort levels for hoarders when they got rid of something. Getting them to realize that the discomfort does not last and they can build up a tolerance to it and part with more stuff.
Mb Yes, it absolutely does.
