Because those kinds of fictional scientific devices will be necessary for long-term Mars missions, and are the kinds of things that are under development now. And when he does make up a technology, he almost always explains the (valid) science behind it, instead of just going all Star Trek:TNG and saying the issue could be solved by routing tachyons through the plasma conduits.
