Joshua Pray At the time the novel takes place, the Gold Rush and the westward expansion of the railroads had resulted in an influx of Chinese immigrant workers to the US. San Francisco was a hub of both of these activities, and so Chinatown originally grew up simply as the spot where the Chinese immigrants lived together.

About midway through the novel, Windrider and Moon Shadow make the pretty big decision to move out of Chinatown -- meaning away from only Chinese speakers and away from those who already intimately understood/respected their culture -- in order to gain experience in what was at that time a particularly western endeavour: mechanical engineering.
