Stephanie I think it is pretty clear that in a lot of aspects of her life she just quite simply did not give AF. You can see that in the way she chose her name (which may or may not be a name she would have chosen if she was not in such a state of mind), in the way she dabbled in heroin, in the way she sabotaged her marriage, and in the way she went onto the trail initially unprepared for what was ahead. She was in tremendous pain in the years leading up to her hike. People in pain; depressed people will do rash and seemingly odd things. Greif does crazy things to people.
