I think that some authors just run out of steam. On a rare good day, they think that they can put the capstone book to finish their series, but that day goes by unused and another good day doesn't come along for a long, long time. In their youth, they can write like the wind. But as they get old, they tire more easily. Can't stay focused. Whatever they had, once upon a time, they just don't have it anymore.
