Can you recommend similar urban fantasy/mystery series? I am looking for something outside of urban romance genre. Thanks, Mike

Phyrkrakr Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid series is similar. The main character, Atticus O'Sullivan, is a several centuries old (and last surviving, presumably) Druid who can do various things through his bond with the earth. He has an Irish wolfhound that he can speak with psychically, which is usually amusing, and he does his best to keep his head down among the various supernatural beings that exist in modern times. This all falls apart spectacularly in the first novel, and he finds himself thrown into the mix with various gods, werewolves, vampires, witches, and fairies.

Like Butcher, Hearne tells the story in first person from the main character's POV. Hearne also isn't afraid to mix and match any sort of supernatural being he wishes to snag and toss into his fantasy world. It's set in contemporary Arizona (for the most part - Atticus does some globe trotting as the series progresses) and there's plenty of witty banter mixed in with the swords and sorcery. The early books aren't quite as polished as where Butcher is now, but closer to what the Dresden Files started out as. Plus, Hearne wrote really really fast, so the first five books all rolled out in paperback in about a year and a half. He seems to have slowed somewhat, but currently, there's seven novels total. Oh, and they're pretty short, quick reads - 300-400 pages that seem to fly by.
