Was it ever mentioned what year are we in ? I kind of assumed it was somewhere late 21st century, because there were some pop culture references to 20th and beginning of 21st and I guess if it were 22nd or later, people would know about them.

To the best of my knowledge it is in the 21st century - a few decades later than our own. I'd have to jump back into the book to get an exact answer and would happily be corrected if wrong.
