Maybe this book wasn't meant to be like her others, and she wanted to try something new. I, personally, liked it.

Vampires were very 'in' there for a while. This book is also filled with sex, and 'sex sells'. My guess is she wasn't confident she could write another great work like 'The Outsiders', so she pandered to the masses and wrote something that, although was less than artistic, would sell. It really is quite disheartening.
